   Every guide I can find skips the part I am actually stuck on. The thing that keeps tripping me up is that everyone assumes you already know the basics, and the wiki is out of date.

   Any pointers appreciated, even partial ones.

   Same boat here. the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.

    This comes up a lot, so: the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.

    That fixed it for me, at least.
