   Apologies if this has been covered — the older threads are all locked. The numbers look fine on paper, but it feels noticeably worse in practice.

   I do not want to sink more time or money into it before I understand what I am optimising for. Any pointers appreciated, even partial ones.

   From experience, the averages hide the problem; look at the one percent lows instead.

   Speaking as someone who got it wrong initially, nine times out of ten it is a driver or a background process, not the thing you suspect.

   Slightly different take — measure before and after, otherwise you are just guessing whether it helped.

   I went through this last month. the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

   Not the answer you want, but do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.

    The usual fix here is the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.

    That fixed it for me, at least.

    Depends on your setup, but broadly this changed for me after the last patch, so older threads may steer you wrong.
