Hero Wars crashing on startup — fixes that worked — beginner questions

Two of us tried the same thing and got different results, hence the thread. The community consensus seems to have shifted twice since I last played.

Let me know if more detail would help.

Depends on your setup, but broadly check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.

Good luck, it is a common snag.

Not the answer you want, but if it only happens in one mode, that narrows it down considerably.

This is the bit people miss — this changed for me after the last patch, so older threads may steer you wrong.

Counterpoint: check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.

For what it is worth, check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.

Slightly different take — verify the files before anything else; it catches more problems than people expect.

That fixed it for me, at least.

Speaking as someone who got it wrong initially, ignore the loudest advice; the boring answer is usually the correct one here.

That fixed it for me, at least.

Adding to the above: do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.

From experience, the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

Report back once you have tried it.

Counterpoint: region and server load matter more than most guides acknowledge.

Counterpoint: give it a clean reinstall before assuming the hardware is at fault.

Agreed on most of this, except ignore the loudest advice; the boring answer is usually the correct one here.

The usual fix here is it is almost always a setting rather than hardware, so try the free fixes before spending anything.

This comes up a lot, so: if it only happens in one mode, that narrows it down considerably.
