This started as a small annoyance and turned into a proper rabbit hole. Everything I read suggests it should just work, and for me it very much does not.
I assumed it was a known issue, but I cannot find anyone else describing it. Any pointers appreciated, even partial ones.

Only partly related, but the wiki number is theoretical; real results are always a bit lower.

From experience, you get most of the benefit from the first adjustment; everything after that is marginal.

Quick correction to the above: check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.

In my testing, the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

This is the bit people miss — the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.
