Turning one setting down fixed it, which raises more questions than it answers. Interested in the counter-argument if there is one.

This comes up a lot, so: do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.

This is the bit people miss — the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.

I went through this last month. the averages hide the problem; look at the one percent lows instead.
That fixed it for me, at least.

Slightly different take — do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.
Worth a shot before anything drastic.

I went through this last month. measure before and after, otherwise you are just guessing whether it helped.

Same boat here. it is almost always a setting rather than hardware, so try the free fixes before spending anything.
