Speaking as someone who got it wrong initially, temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session.

Same boat here. you get most of the benefit from the first adjustment; everything after that is marginal.

This comes up a lot, so: do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.
That fixed it for me, at least.
