Overlay conflicts causing crashes — how I narrowed it down

Third attempt at getting this right, so bear with me. The patch notes hinted at this but never actually spelled it out.

The difference only becomes obvious once you look at the frame times rather than the average. Interested in the counter-argument if there is one.
