Frame generation — genuinely useful or just a number?
Finally worked this out, so here is the write-up I wish I had found. Rolling back to the previous version made the problem disappear entirely.

Finally worked this out, so here is the write-up I wish I had found. Rolling back to the previous version made the problem disappear entirely.
My results were consistent across three attempts, so I do not think it was luck. Hopefully this saves someone else the afternoon it cost me.

The usual fix here is check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.

This comes up a lot, so: the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

Not the answer you want, but if it only happens in one mode, that narrows it down considerably.

Agreed on most of this, except nine times out of ten it is a driver or a background process, not the thing you suspect.

Slightly different take — that behaviour is intentional, even though it is poorly explained in-game.

Slightly different take — the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.
