Finally worked this out, so here is the write-up I wish I had found. It works fine most of the time, but the edge cases are where I keep getting stuck.

What confuses me is that it behaves differently depending on the order I do things in. Thanks in advance to anyone who chips in.

This comes up a lot, so: the difference is real but small enough that you may not notice it while playing.

Had the exact same issue. the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

For what it is worth, give it a clean reinstall before assuming the hardware is at fault.

Adding to the above: check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.
