    I compared notes with a friend and we got completely different outcomes on similar hardware. Hopefully this saves someone else the afternoon it cost me.

    Agreed on most of this, except temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session.

    Good luck, it is a common snag.

    Only partly related, but the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.

    Report back once you have tried it.

    Speaking as someone who got it wrong initially, the averages hide the problem; look at the one percent lows instead.
